How to iSync a Nokia 6300

Nokia 6300 It appears that Mac OS X’s iSync does not natively support the Nokia 6300. A closer look revealed that several other Nokia phones that run the exact same operating system as the Nokia 6300 are supported in OS X, so therefore, the 6300 is actually supported. We are going to modify iSync, so its also seeing the 6300 as a supported phone.

In order to get this device working with iSync, follow these steps:

Quit iSync if its running. Right-click on the iSync application in your /Applications folder, and select “Show Package Contents”. Navigate through the folders to Contents -> PlugIns -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> PlugIns -> PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin -> Contents -> Resources. Back-up the MetaClasses.plist file by clicking on it, and select File->Duplicate from the Finder menu. Next, open MetaClasses.plist with a text editor.

The Nokia 6280 runs Series 40, 3rd edition with Bluetooth and USB, exactly the same as the 6300. We're going to copy the XML entry of the 6280 model, and changing it a little bit, so the 6300 is getting recognized by iSync.
The 6280 XML entry starts with “family.com.nokia.series40.3rdEd.bus.usb-bt”. So make a copy of it’s XML entry, and replace 6280 to 6300, and insert the new entry below it. Here is my Nokia 6300 definition or just use my complete MetaClasses.plist file.

In order to get an 6300 icon displayed in iSync, we need to add a tiff file to the same directory as the MetaClasses.plist
The icons are 60×60 pixel tiff files with transparent back-grounds. Here is the icon file that I used for the 6300, just put it in the same folder.

Save and close the MetaClasses.plist file and start up or restart iSync. Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Select “Add Device” from the iSync Devices menu. iSync should find your Nokia 6300, and display the icon that you've added.

thank you man! works perfectly.

Wonderful! 1000 thanks. If only read this article before paying for one of those alternative isync programs
Pioneer @ 18.04.2007 22:24 CEST
Must be the most useful hack I ever used. It worked straight away. And this after hours and hours and hours I usually spent trying to sync my new toys with iCal. Big THANK YOU!
Olivier Grimbert @ 19.04.2007 16:23 CEST
Super ! Lot of thanks, my new bought nokia... works well ! I thougt I'll found this kind of info on the net and you are the one. From france.
Charlie Anderson @ 19.04.2007 19:06 CEST
Works perfectly. Thank you.
Dash @ 22.04.2007 09:21 CEST
Doesn’t seem to be working for me. I’ve tried the hack a couple of times, I bought the plugin from the German website, every time I just get an “unexpected” iSync error about halfway through syncing.

Maybe my phone OS is out of date? It’s V 04.20, 05-12-06 RM-217.
Koos @ 22.04.2007 11:01 CEST
@Dash
Did you tried to reset the sync history in the iSync prefs ?
Angus @ 23.04.2007 11:26 CEST
Awesome tips, thanks heaps! No second class Mac citizen for me!

If you lack Bluetooth, you can also get the 6300 to sync via USB if you change this section:

com.apple.usb.vendorid-modelid
0x0421/0x045A

To this:

com.apple.usb.vendorid-modelid
0x0421/0x04F9 (At least on my Australian-spec 6300.)

I also found that the name of the TIFF file was case sensitive. I had to match the casing before it showed up right.

Again, awesome tip. Thanks heaps!
Gary @ 23.04.2007 14:57 CEST
thanks! this was fantastically helpful and worked first time.
Karl @ 23.04.2007 21:07 CEST
awsome!
Edwin @ 24.04.2007 08:52 CEST
Thanks, this is great! I wish I discovered this earlier though: I already bought a third-party plugin for this but I find your solution so much more "elegant".

I do have a problem though, whether with your or the third-party solution. Whenever I have any whole-day events, they show up as appointments from 8pm to 8pm on my phone. Why can't they show up as full-day notes? I didn't encounter this problem when I used iSync with my Nokia 6280. I'm guessing this has something to do with my time zone (I am at GMT +8)? Any pointers would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Koos @ 24.04.2007 09:27 CEST
@Edwin

I'm encountering this problem too.
All-day events show up as appointments from 14:00 to 14:00.. very weird..

Maybe someone has a fix for this..
viv @ 24.04.2007 12:48 CEST
Absolutely works like a wonder, Many thanks
Edwin @ 24.04.2007 16:10 CEST
Thanks Koos for your post! At least I know I'm not alone! I wonder if it has anything to do with the firmware of the phone? Mine is the same as Dash's i.e. V4.20 5-12-06. Which version do you have?
Koos @ 24.04.2007 16:13 CEST
@Edwin
My phone's firmware version is V 04.70 and production date: 24-01-07.
David @ 24.04.2007 18:42 CEST
Thanks Koos for the post. Question, is there somewhere I need to store the nok6300.tiff file for my device to be recognized. I followed your instructions, inserted your 6300 XML entry underneath the 6280 entry, saved the MetaClasses.plist file, and then saved the new .tiff file to the desktop. Upon adding a new device in isync i get no device found. You can see I'm somewhat of a novice. Thanks for any suggestions.
Koos @ 24.04.2007 18:50 CEST
@David
Thanks for your comment !
I didn't even knew the icon didn't work!
The icon has to be spelled in capital letters.
I've reuploaded the correct named file.

You have to put the NOK6300.tiff file in the following directory: iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources
Erling Myrland @ 25.04.2007 01:14 CEST
I'm sorry but I can't figure this out.
I've copied the NOK6300.tiff file in the designated directory. And it seems to be fine.

However do you want me to copy and paste your Nokia 6300 text in after the 6280 text? Or should I replace the whole 6280 entry with the 6300 text?
Dash @ 25.04.2007 03:08 CEST
Thanks Koos, I'm not sure what I did but it's working now.
Koos @ 25.04.2007 08:02 CEST
@Erling Myrland
You can do both, but the most usual way is to place the new entry under the 6280.
Alex @ 25.04.2007 13:31 CEST

KAVANAKI @ 28.04.2007 16:27 CEST
Hi, this worked perfectly THANKS.
do you know how i can sync music on my mac to nokia 6300..
Koos @ 28.04.2007 16:36 CEST
@KAVANAKI
You can just hook up your phone with the usb cable and transfer the music to you device. This way is much faster than transfering those files via bluetooth.

In these comments is a fix for getting usb to work with iSync.
DLP @ 28.04.2007 18:18 CEST
Took 15mins...perfect solution. Much appreciated. You are a scholar and a gentleman for letting us know!
Senti @ 30.04.2007 10:20 CEST
I am keen to learn how to do this but I think I have blown it. I cannot find "6280" in the Metaclasses.plist files. so I do not know where to insert your "6300"
XML entry.

I am very confused and not in the least computer savvy. I would welcome a more pedestrian breakdown. Graphics really help!

I will crack this somehow
Koos @ 30.04.2007 10:24 CEST
@Senti
Do you run the latest version of Tiger ?
If you screwed it up, you can just restore the iSync.app from your Tiger DVD with an application called Pacifist. If you still got problems, I can upload my complete Metaclasses.plist for you...
Senti @ 30.04.2007 10:32 CEST
Thanks for your quick response Koos. I do run the latest version of Tiger. I also made a copy of the MetaClasses.plist before I tinkered. Will I need to restore iSync.app?
Koos @ 30.04.2007 10:38 CEST
Yes, just replace the backup of your iSync.app,
and try again.

Here's my Metaclasses file.
Make sure you put it in the correct directory, add the tiff file and your done.
Senti @ 30.04.2007 10:59 CEST
Oh yea baby. Thanks Koos you have blown me away. IT WORKS. Your expertise is great. What is also great is your generosity to share your knowledge. You have inspired me to be generous and share my skills with others around me. Awesome.

Thanks

@Senti,
Your welcome !
KavANAKI @ 30.04.2007 12:11 CEST
Hi Koos, what application do i open on a mac to transfer music files to the phone. cheers,
Koos @ 30.04.2007 16:02 CEST
@KavANAKI
Just connect the phone via usb, and set up the phone in data transfer mode (pop-up will appear on the phone after connecting) and browse your device with the Volume which appears on your desktop.
Wazza @ 01.05.2007 16:06 CEST
Thanks. Worked a treat and it's the first time I've ever used iSync on my Mac too! I was going to buy a different (less expensive) Nokia until I found your instructions last night. One would think it is in Nokia's interests to release this themselves.

Once again - thanks!
Mikkel Neimann @ 01.05.2007 22:35 CEST
Hi!
This doesn't work for me.
I've place the MetaClasses.plist with yours, i've reseted the iSync history, placed and renamed the .tiff.
What more can i do?
Koos @ 01.05.2007 22:41 CEST
@Mikkel Neimann
Do you use USB ?
For USB you need to change the code, check the comments for that.
Connecting with Bluetooth has to work immediatly.
Mikkel Neimann @ 01.05.2007 22:44 CEST
I tried through the Bluetooth.
I must be doing something wrong, 'cus it seems to work for the most of people.
Koos @ 01.05.2007 22:47 CEST
@Mikkel Neimann
Did you already paired your device with the bluetooth utility in OSX ?
Mikkel Neimann @ 01.05.2007 22:53 CEST
No, do i have to?
mikkel Neimann @ 01.05.2007 22:56 CEST
It fucking worked, at last.
Thanks a lot dude!
Declan @ 05.05.2007 06:45 CEST
This looks just what I need. However when I open the contents box I find all of the folders ("plugins", etc) empty, and so can't find the metaclasses file. Any idea why? Thanks
Koos @ 05.05.2007 09:23 CEST
@Declan,
Are you using Mac OS Tiger ?
And are your 100% sure you're folders are empty ?

You must browse to the exactly given path, otherwise it won't work..
Declan @ 05.05.2007 09:42 CEST
Koos, i'm using 10.4.9 - that's tiger, right? and yes i'm sure they are empty. very strange...
Koos @ 05.05.2007 09:45 CEST
@Declan
Indeed very strange..
Do you have another mac ?
Try to replace the iSync app from another machine.. or extract the iSync application from your tiger dvd with Pacifist (Application).
Declan @ 05.05.2007 10:12 CEST
Koos, Okay, think you are right, will try it with another machine. One other quick question - I can't connect the laptop to the internet using GPRS either. I get a message on the phone that says 'subscribe to packet data first'. i'm using your settings and have tried different modem scripts. i wonder if this is a problem with the mobile phone company? it worked with my last phone, a 6210...
Koos @ 05.05.2007 10:35 CEST
@Declan
I don't have experience with GRPS, since I don't use it.
Can't help you with that..
Jacob Yarl @ 05.05.2007 10:51 CEST

Hi

Almost there. Want to transfer a tune from mac osx to nokia6300 via bluetooth. Have copied exact. When trying to add device mac says 1 item found and has the pic of phone but says mac does not support the nokia6300. Any ideas? Dont have usb.
Thanks.
Koos @ 08.05.2007 07:59 CEST
@moon.calf
This has nothing todo with syncing.
Just browse to your file, and select it.
After that, press cmd (apple) + shift + b, select your device, and click 'send'.
Gregor @ 08.05.2007 19:44 CEST
Hi,

i tried out your "hack", but somehow i made a mistake and my Nokia 6300 is not working to sync it and what is more worse is that after i chnaged these entries even my 6280 is not working anymore. What makes me a bit wonder from the beginning is that the structur of the folders was not the same like you explained.... and i´m not a proffesinal in Mac OS....
Maybe someone can help me abit and give me tips, please?
Thanx Gregor
Koos @ 08.05.2007 21:18 CEST
@Gregor,
Do you use Mac OS 10.4.9 ?
If so, something must be messed up with iSync.
Try to extract the original application from your install DVD by using an application called 'Pacifist' and try again, or just get the application from another mac.
Gregor @ 09.05.2007 06:38 CEST
Thanx for your answer, by the time (in the night), i downloaded your file from your website and i just copied it in my directory and suddenly the sync with my "old" 6280 worked again and even the 6300 is working now too!!! But i don´t know why, because i copied my file and yours on my other computer (win xp) and i checked them and they are exactly the same, only my one had the symbol of a strawberry (from omnitron) and your was blank....
Brad @ 09.05.2007 18:40 CEST

Hi Koos - thanks for your help! Although it seems to work with most other people posting here, I still have a problem: my phone is recognized by isync, but whenever I start syncing an error occurs immediately and isync aborts syncing. I already resetted the isync history. No changes. My PhoneOS is V04.70/24-01-07. I use Entourage on my Mac, is that a problem? Any conclusion?? HELP!
Koos @ 01.06.2007 21:06 CEST
@Jogo

Yes, there's a change Encourage is causing this problem.. try to sync one time with iCal, so you can see for yourself what application is responsable for these errors.

and retry.

You also need a bluetooth partnership, maybe you didn't made that..

Hi Koos,
I just bought a Nokia 6275 and tried you method for updating the classes list. It did now work. Do you have any ideas if anything else needs to be done. The phone discovers the bluetooth connection.

Thank you.

Koos @ 23.06.2007 10:14 CEST
@Jonas Lood,

If the phone's software or hardware is different than the 6300 or 6280, this trick is not going to work with your phone. Your phone is also a brand new model, maybe you should wait a couple weeks and try to search the internet again.
Meng @ 24.06.2007 08:14 CEST

I think I altered and completely messed up my Metaclasses.plist. The link above to your entire plist does not work, nothing comes up.

Could you send me your entire metaclasses.plist that INCLUDES the 6300 XML. This is just not working for me.

Really appreciate your help.

Koos @ 17.07.2007 19:28 CEST
Do you sync with an USB cable, or do you use Bluetooth ?
Jess @ 17.07.2007 19:36 CEST
I use Bluetooth…
Koos @ 17.07.2007 19:39 CEST
I suggest to re-apply the steps in the tutorial. The application has probably overwritten the MetaClasses file, which contains the Nokia 6300 entry.
Jess @ 17.07.2007 19:52 CEST
I already did that, I tried it many times. Is it possible to get the whole folder?

Are there any prefs in the 6300 I have to set?

Thank you!
Koos @ 18.07.2007 16:07 CEST
I don't think you have to find the solution on the phone's side. But I think I know what you're doing wrong / what you've forgotten. I think the partnership between your mac and your phone is broken. Try to add your Nokia 6300 again in the bluetooth devices list, and the problem must be solved.
Thomas Edwardson @ 20.07.2007 21:47 CEST
Found a freely available plugin that makes it even more easy to make the Nokia 6300 supported in iSync.

Koos,
By their comments the method works fine but not for me that I have a Nokia 6275.

I tried all yours tips without success. A Nokia Dev page (http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/6275) said that 6275 has the same family as 6300. In fact ISync find it but said: "This device is not supported by ISync"

Any other clue on this. Totally appreciated.

I had a problem with my Nokia 6300 phone. Every time I browse the Opera Mini (3rd party software) I got prompted with "subscribe to packet data first". I set all the configuration but still won't able to access it. Please advice or recommend solution. thanks.. :)

thanks - worked perfectly for iCal sync!
My contacts aren't syncing from phone to mac though - any reason why that might happen?

@Rums,

Awesome!
You didn't hijack anything, thanks a lot for this information and guide!

I will make a link to it in my blog post.
richard hanmer @ 20.08.2007 18:46 CEST
IT WORKS GREAT. iSync is the easiest sync tool around and this hack helps keep that way. The ONLY thing that I was surpised by was that it doesn't sync the photo for your contact. My other phone is a Sony Ericsson P900 - a symbian phone and have used iSync with. It displays the photos for my contacts but Nokia 6300 doesn't. Is this an OS thing?
Koos @ 20.08.2007 19:08 CEST
@Richard Hammer,

Read the last line of the blog post.
There you'll find a link to a fix for your problem.
Rums @ 20.08.2007 19:25 CEST
Glad it works for you, Koos! I'm pretty pleased that we were able to make it past this hump. Now, for me to start working on auto-syncing when I get in range of my laptop... :-)

Sorry previous post was not clear.

Basically I changed the string 'Nokia+Nokia 6300' to 'Nokia Mobile Phones+Nokia 6275i' for the com.apple.cgmi+cgmm and the com.apple.gmi+gmm keys.

This allow iSync to add the phone but the sync errors out.
Maki @ 16.09.2007 23:50 CEST
For all of you who are having issues with Calendar event hours sync'd incorrectly from iCal -> 6300, I think this can be corrected by modifying the following setting to a value of false:
hasTimeZone
<false/>

Inside the following file:
PhonePlugins/Nokia6300.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/MetaClasses.plist

If the setting has the value of true, then my iCal events appear with a GMT time difference on my handset when the event was created in iCal (it appears fine when created on the handset). You can avoid this by either changing your events as belonging to a "floating" time zone in iCal (enable Time zone support first in Advanced prefs).. or by modifying this setting. I wish I discovered this difference in the MetaClasses file first, would have saved me changing all my events to floating!

Hi just updated the phoneplugin but still can’t get the phone to synchronize the mobile contacts with the adress book.
Well it does synchronize but the phone contacts is beeing synchronized into the group “ALL” but I made a separate group just for the phone but it will not synchronize into this group?
Any idea?
I am running OS X 10.4.10, isync 2.4 and adress book 4.0.5.

Chris @ 31.10.2007 02:27 CEST
It also works with the new iSync 3.0 in OS 10.5. But it became some more difficult:
1. Go to iSync/contents/plugins/applephoneconduit.syncdevice/contents/plugins/. Then duplicate for example the "nokia-7370.phoneplugin" folder. Rename it as "nokia-6300.phoneplugin"
2. Go to …/nokia-6300.phoneplugin/contents and open the info.plist file with TextEdit. Press Apple-Key and F and replace every 7370 with 6300. Save the file!
3. Do the same thing with the …/nokia-6300.phoneplugin/contents/resources/metaclasses.plist file.
4. Replace the "com.nokia.7370.tiff" file in the same folder by the icon from above. Don't forget to rename it as "com.nokia.6300.tiff" - Done
I've already tested it and it works perfectly! Have fun!

Got a 6120classic with the same series 40 3rd eition as the 6300.
How do you get the Hex ID of a model ? Would like to "customize" your plist by exchanging all >6300< entries by this model. Guess I have to modify also the modelid which for the 6300 is 0x04F9..... Where is this Info readable ?
Chris @ 11.11.2007 16:19 CEST
Well, I have not customized any modelid. If your mobile is running the series 40 3rd edition, I guess you will not have any trouble. You can read this info exclusively here, since I figured it out on my own,
Matt @ 12.11.2007 13:41 CEST
Mhh pretty strange the calendar syncing is not working very well on my Mac with Leopard and Nokia 6300. Only one old calendar which is not rally part of iCal will be synced. Does anybody have an idea?

Thx, Matt
jp @ 13.11.2007 00:23 CEST
My problem still persists... I've tried both the plugin and the iSync hack suggested by Chris (worked well, but...)

When I start iSync and try to add the device, it finds 6300 and opens the connection to phone (and closes it after about 20 seconds).

I double-click the logo in iSync to add the device, but then it says no device found.

Anyway the Nokia 6300 now shows in iSync, but it doesn't do anything to sync it. iSync seems to be somewhat jammed, when it opens it just says "refreshing contact groups information" and doesn't get anywhere from there.

I'm running Powerbook G4 with Leopard and Nokia 6300 with firmware 5.00.

Thanks for your comments!

This just refuses to work for me -- I'm sure the plugin is fine, but I think that the combination of Leopard and a USB connection has proved too much. Ironically, I only need to sync my 6300 because I'm swapping the crappy, outdated piece of sh*t for an iPhone. No OSX synchronisation in 2008? Bye bye, Nokia.

hmmm - this makes no difference to me - the device doesn't show up at all. It's in "about this mac" and I can use the card as a folder in the finder... when attached to the phone in usb. But when I add device it says no device found. AND I have no idea where you are seeing these icons show up; there are few options anywhere that seem to relate to choosing a phone model or telling isynch what to look for. It's just add device --> no device found. The end.

Hi Koos,

I checked out the link you provide for getting birthdays to work on dabgortra.com. These infos didn't help me at all, and the iphone plugin provided on that page doesn't seem to work with isync version 3 and leopard.

But I did get the birthdays to work now!
The following page is in german, but you should find your way around:
http://www.macuser.de/forum/showthread.php?t=256320

go to the post from "idrops" on April 7 and add the birthday string as indicated after "SyncEngine-series40.plist".

This must be done in the following file:
Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneFamilySync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/PhoneConduitv2-series40.plist

It now syncs birthdays from Address Book to nokia 6300 and vice versa. (i.e. the birthday entry for an individual contact on the nokia is synched, and it appears in it's calendar).

Hope someone can use this... the pictures would be nice too, but that isn't as important to me..
John @ 22.04.2008 14:53 CEST
oops, that was a mistake... I posted the wrong filename!

the correct file is :
SyncEngine-series40.plist
NOT the phoneconduitv2-series-40 one.

My Nokia 6300 is overflowing with textmessages (SMS) and I desperately need to save them on my MacBook.
For reasons far, very far, beyond my means of understanding (and I can understand a lot of bullshit) Nokia seems to be unwilling to support this need.
Could you show me a way to downlowd MY smses from MY handy onto MY MacBook?
My 6300 is by now running into severe troubles (frequent resets and all sorts of disturbing behaviours like getting stuck during calls etc) because of the overflow of smses.
Thank you for your help!
Sincerely
Markus Kühne
P. S. I´ve voiced this request in the Nocia Club a long time ago and wasn´t even graced with an answer! Nokia doesn´t like having customers, does it?
