iPod Touch 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 upgrade guide

This guide describes how to upgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 including the jailbreak hack.
  1. First we're going to restore the device, in order to upgrade the device properly. On my first attempt, I skipped this step, but after upgrading, my springboard woudn't load anymore. Fire up itunes, and click restore. If it doesn't restore to 1.1.1 (i.e.: it restores to 1.1.2) download here 1.1.1, hold alt when clicking on restore, and select the downloaded 1.1.1. firmware file.
  2. Next step is jailbreaking the clean 1.1.1 install, just browse to http://jailbreakme.com and click on "install appsnap"
  3. Next, open up Installer, browse to the Patches section, and install Oktoprep. This prepares 1.1.1 touches for jailbreaking the 1.1.2 firmware.
  4. Now you're ready to install the 1.1.2 firmware. Open iTunes again and click on "upgrade". If the 1.1.2 firmware doesn't show up, download it here, hold alt when clicking "upgrade" and select the downloaded file
  5. Let iTunes do its work, when it finishes the upgrade proces, quit iTunes and download 1.1.2-jailbreak.zip
  6. Unzip the files in the archive to ~/Desktop/jailbreak, open terminal and type:
    cd ~/Desktop/jailbreak
    ./osx
and let the application do its work.
  7. To install the iphone apps, like mail etc, download this archive, and extract Weather.app, MobileMail.app, Stock.app, Maps.app, MobileNotes to /Applications/, GMM.framework to /System/Library/Frameworks/ and MobileMailSettings.bundle to /System/Library/PreferenceBundles/.
  8. To extend your Application folder size, read this blogpost.
  9. For merging the Music and Video icons, read this blogpost.

Hi. Might have gotten wrong but wanted to ask: you say "hold alt when clicking "upgrade" and select the downloaded file". However, the file that is downloaded is a folder with many files in it. When clicking alt+update button on iTunes, it needs to pick up a single file. Which single file is that, among the files that are downloaded?
Koos @ 13.11.2007 08:53 CEST
@ Arti,
Just select the downloaded zip file, thats all !
Arti Gallipoli @ 13.11.2007 13:48 CEST
Thanks, solved! I go step by step and now got stuck with step 6. Right after the ./osx command I put on the terminal screen, a dialogue box appeared with the same error message you will find below at the bottom, on the terminal screen...

"Last login: Tue Nov 13 13:37:43 on console
Welcome to Darwin!
Tevfik-2:~ Tevfik$ cd ~/Desktop/jailbreak
Tevfik-2:~/Desktop/jailbreak Tevfik$ ./osx
Connecting to iPod/iPhone...
Cannot connect to your device: Please plug your iPod/iPhone into your computer. If you're still having trouble, restart the computer, reconnect the device and try again."

The problem is, my iPod Touch is connected to my MacBook at the time.

Any suggestions?
Koos @ 13.11.2007 13:56 CEST
Is your Touch turned on, when connected to your MacBook ?
Ira Edelman @ 14.11.2007 17:38 CEST
Thank you for providing the link to the iPod download! That was impossible to find!
Arti Gallipoli @ 14.11.2007 18:38 CEST
Jailbroken! :) Thanks a lot!!!
Giovannimaasasa @ 15.11.2007 01:20 CEST
Does this work for iPhone?
Arthur York @ 15.11.2007 02:02 CEST
I used your guide and got through #6 OK, but when I reset my Touch unit, I dont see any new icon. I cant download AppSnapp as I could in 1.1.1 What do you suggest?
Koos @ 15.11.2007 08:24 CEST
@Arthur,
You clicked "restore" in step 6 in stead of "upgrade". Please restore to 1.1.1 again and repeat the steps.

@Giovanni, I have no idea, but I'm sure you need some more steps to break the activation and simlock.
Arthur York @ 15.11.2007 17:04 CEST
Thanks much for your help, as a newbie I really appreciate it!!

So now I have a new Icon named SSH. When I open it, I can select on or off for "openSSH"

There is also a space asking for a new password although it does not bring up the keyboard to enter anything. It does bring up a message, "Changed after application closes."

Now what?
Koos @ 15.11.2007 17:37 CEST
Connect via your terminal to your iPod Touch:
ssh -l root iPod.local

password is alpine
Now enter:
passwd

and type your new password.

When i tried to restore my iphone to 1.1.1 as i have verison 1.1.2. I downloaded the verison 1.1.1 from this page and when it was fully downloaded. i connected my iphone to itunes and clicked on restore while holding shift to let me choose the 1.1.1 file which i downloaded and after a minute of downloaded and extracting. It gave me a error saying unknown error (05) has occured. I had to restore back to 1.1.2 as everything crashed. HELP PLEASE
Koos @ 18.11.2007 15:20 CEST
@Jay,
This is an iPod Touch guide, nog an iPhone guide..
doug macdonell @ 18.11.2007 19:35 CEST
Maybe I am an idiot but is the restore procedure listed here only for Mac users? I have downloaded and unzipped the 1.1.1 file as you suggested, but itunes still only wants to reinstall 1.1.2. I am holding the alt button down but it makes no difference.
Koos @ 18.11.2007 19:41 CEST
@Doug,
Yes it's only for Mac users, because Windows users need to hold the SHIFT key.
Chris @ 19.11.2007 01:02 CEST
These instructions are fantastic. Thank you for your help.
doug macdonell @ 19.11.2007 01:48 CEST
Thanks.
doug macdonell @ 19.11.2007 02:33 CEST
Could you help me with step 6 as it applies to a pc? Thanks so much.
Chris @ 19.11.2007 09:06 CEST
Doug,
My guess is you unzip the directory, open up that directory, and double-click the windows.bat file. Does that work?
doug macdonell @ 19.11.2007 16:11 CEST
That was my first guess, but it does not seem to work. I get an error message when the batch file is opened. Sigh.
Koos @ 19.11.2007 16:15 CEST
@Doug,

The windows steps are:

1. Connect your device to your computer
2. Launch iTunes
3. Choose your device
4. Click Update
- If update still shows 1.1.1 as being the newest version, you may download the 1.1.2 from an
Apple download server and shift-click on "Check for update" and
select the update you downloaded.
- DO NOT CLICK OR SHIFT-CLICK RESTORE: That will wipe the changes OktoPrep made.
5. Wait forever for your device to update
6. Close iTunes
7. Connect your device to your computer
8. On Windows, double click on windows.bat, on Mac, double click on jailbreak.jar
9. Follow the on screen instructions.
Melvin @ 22.11.2007 01:42 CEST
When I try to open Mail or Weather or anything of the apps, it crashes. It opens up and then in awhile it returns to the Home again.
Koos @ 22.11.2007 09:56 CEST
@Melvin,

Connect via ssh to your Touch and enter the folowing command:
chmod -R a+x /Applications/*
This will corect their permissions.
Melvin @ 22.11.2007 10:35 CEST
Thank you so much Koos! It works pefectly now!
Melvin @ 22.11.2007 11:03 CEST
Koos, one more question. I cannot seem to get my Email in the Mail app. It takes forever before it even saves my account, and I am 100% sure that no firewall is blocking it, and that my account information is correct.
Koos @ 22.11.2007 11:19 CEST
Melvin, which email service are you using ?
There's a known problem with yahoo mail at the moment with the Touch and iPhone.
Gmail is usable with imap when you turn it on at the preferences.
Melvin @ 22.11.2007 11:32 CEST
I am trying to reach pop.kabelfoon.net on my iTouch. Using the Other settings. And Gmail is working great if you use the Gmail settings standard. Did not click on anything that showed IMAP.
Koos @ 22.11.2007 11:37 CEST
Well I have seriously no idea what the problem is.. I suggest you to check out some iPhone and Touch forums and search for problems regarding POP mail.
Melvin @ 23.11.2007 10:26 CEST
Well for some reason I got it working absolutely fine now! So thanks anyway! But this is my last question haha. Seems like my Auto Brightness is not functioning after jailbreaking the iTouch. I went into a darkroom with the iTouch, and the brightness remained the same as going into the light. The Auto Brightness is on, you see the blue thing when you go into the Settings. And I am 100% sure this worked with 1.1.2 with not jailbreaking the iTouch. Thanks again for your reply!
Koos @ 23.11.2007 10:32 CEST
Well to be honest, my auto brightness doesn't work either. And I as far as I know it didn't work before I did the jailbreak proces... Can't help you with this one..
andre @ 23.11.2007 17:26 CEST
ok guys, if someone can help me step by step in how to transfer the application such e-mails, maps, weather etc.. so i already have my touch unlocked, and i have already downloaded the application folder on my pc. I don't know how to transfer those application to my ipod touch, if someone can please help me step by step (ps i'm not very good with the language used, if u can be patient :)
Andre @ 23.11.2007 18:48 CEST
Ps i don't have this SSH that people are saying around, so i have no idea where to get or how...
it really sucks i have been reading all kinds of articles about it, and somehow i can't still figure it out.
Erik @ 28.11.2007 02:31 CEST
heyy. thanks alot for this. but i think you should change the insruction to "Press shift when you press restore" atleast for pc users because alt didnt work and i spent an hour trying to figure that out lol =]
~Thanks
Koos @ 28.11.2007 02:55 CEST
Ok, but this is a mac blog, not a PC blog.
Read next time the comments, so you will know which button to press :D.
Chris @ 28.11.2007 08:36 CEST
I cannot get past step 1! Every single time I download the 1.1.1 my Mac automatically unzipps it and I end up with a folder entitled "iPod1,1_1" and in it are several different files,

022-3601-4.dmg
022-3604-4.dmg
022-3605-4.dmg
Firmware
kernelcache.release.s5l8900xrb
Restore.plist

I cannot select the entire folder when I try to alt restore, and if I click on any of the .dmg files or the last two I get err codes. and the Firmware folder just takes me into many other folders that dont do anything either. How do I get my iTouch back to 1.1.1?!?!

I had the hack loaded when I was originally on 1.1.1... but I forgot to download that octoprep file before I upgraded. Apple royally frucked up with all this blockage BS.

Anybody have any word on a new hack that doesn't involve a reset to 1.1.1?
Koos @ 28.11.2007 09:59 CEST
Just disable Safari's feature to unpack downloaded files. You don't need to unzip the archive.

And you really need Oktoprep, before you're upgrading to 1.1.2.
mank @ 30.11.2007 09:42 CEST
Thank you so much for such an excellent guide.

Please bear with me, I'm confused by step #7, perhaps because I'm using Windows and not a Mac.

Step 7 says:

To install the iphone apps, like mail etc, download this archive, and extract Weather.app, MobileMail.app, Stock.app, Maps.app, MobileNotes to /Applications/, GMM.framework to /System/Library/Frameworks/ and MobileMailSettings.bundle to /System/Library/PreferenceBundles/.

Where is /Applications/ and /System/Library/Frameworks/ etc? Are these directories on one's computer or on the iPod Touch?

Thanks and sorry to be so thick!
Koos @ 30.11.2007 18:22 CEST
Yes they are on the iPod Touch !
Scott @ 30.11.2007 23:53 CEST
Almost got it lol. Just #7. I have dl the file and unzipped it. It is sitting on my desktop. Not sure where to put the files. Can you break it down a bit better for the not so computer savy :)
The .app (on the mac hd under applications.. just drop them in there?)

I tried putting the GMM.Framework file in the system/library/frameworks, but it said it couldn't be moved because it could not be modified.
I stopped there because I figured I was screwing things up.

Cheers
mank @ 01.12.2007 03:02 CEST
This is probably a really daft question. But I can't seem to see the file system of my iPod Touch. I'm running Win XP, and when I plug in the iPod, I can see it under My Computer ... as a camera! Opening it reveals "0 objects". Are there any other Win XP users with the same predicament? Thanks for any help.
Scott @ 01.12.2007 03:26 CEST
Great walkthough.. Just a quick suggestion, I found the Step 7 a bit confusing. I found that you could install those apps right from within the installer. This helped me out a lot.

Thanks
mank @ 01.12.2007 03:39 CEST
@Scott

Could you explain how, please?
Koos @ 01.12.2007 15:55 CEST
@ Scott,

Yes thats also possible.
Just add this repository in your installer.app:
http://repo.us.to/
and you can install those apps from installer too.
shane @ 03.12.2007 03:20 CEST
I get to step 6, but then it says my device is not connected. I tried following the directions you gave earlier to someone, but it still isn't seeing that my ipod is connected.

Any advice??
'84 Pontiac Dream @ 07.12.2007 08:51 CEST
Can someone tell me what the benefits are of updating to 1.1.2? I have 1.1.1 and lots of great apps on it, but I want to know what I'm missing by not making the upgrade.

I haven't been able to get mail.app on or the sendfile.app. Is that what's stopping me?

Thanks in advance for the intelligent responses I get. =)

kevin @ 18.12.2007 01:56 CEST
ok im on a pc and I do everything right. when I get to step 6 though, thats where my problem lies. I just got my ipod touch on saturday the 15 of december. it came with 1.1.2 as the base firmware. i downgrade to 1.1.1 in the upgrade button then use the restore other wise I get an error message. I do the appsnapp step after i do the restore part just like in the directions. thats all successful and then i do the update button to 1.1.2. next I extract the 1.1.2-jailbreak.zip and run the windows.bat. I have closed itunes and the device is on. then the command prompt opens and just as fast as it opens, its gone. nothing else pops up and nothing else happens. What am I doing wrong. Is it because my ipod started on firmware 1.1.2? it was hacked when I was at 1.1.1 (I downgraded so that I could jailbreak it before and was just trying to see if I could update.) Can anyone help me? maybe send me to a forum or tell me where and what I need to do to get good and hacked on 1.1.2.

thanks

this was the ticket!!!

crac @ 18.12.2007 12:16 CEST
@Kevin
> do you have java installed?
it may be that the .bat file is trying to do the work
and finds that it can't do the work
one way to debug .bat files is to put a PAUSE
in the file. do this by opening the .bat file in notepad and add a line that says PAUSE at the end of the file...
with this you will be able to see what is happening in the command window and any error messages you might get...
Dale @ 18.12.2007 15:49 CEST
I also have the problem where my pc thinks my ipod touch is a camera and can't connect when I run the jailbreak SSH thing, do I have to go to http://repo.us.to/ via my ipod? Or do I have to downgrade back to 1.1.1, load the installer then install it from that?

Any help with this would be great!
kevin @ 18.12.2007 19:19 CEST
no it appears i do not have java installed. This is what the .bat file says: C:Documents and SettingsKevinDesktop1.1.2-jailbreak>java -jar jailbreak.jar 'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

So what do i need to do here? Im assuming get java and try again? If so can someone link me to a site so i can download it?

Thanks

hey, great blog and great post. i've been anticipating jailbreaking my ipod for so long, but something has gone wrong :( !!!! the .jar file runs, i can't input the terminal command to access the "osx" but the .jar file seems to run fine byitself. anyway, it runs well, until the ipod is supposed to restart after everything has completed. it just hangs there. also, i tried canceling and rebooting from recovery mode using the .jar file but that also does not work. idk. it just hangs on "Sending Commands"

anyway, not sure whats up, oh wait, i should check and see if i have the latest java installed, but maybe someone might know something. sorry for being a bother!

Can't find many people with this problem:

I had to go back to 1.1.1. After installing oktoprep on my jb touch I try to use itunes to update to 1.1.2. I get an error (5) message and the ipod is left in restore mode. Mac and windows do the same thing. iTunes 7.5

At one point this touch was JB 1.1.3. Can't get back. This touch has seen itunes 7.6 - maybe that did it? Totally stuck.
Thanks for any help.
