How to iSync a Nokia 6300
It appears that Mac OS X’s iSync does not natively support the Nokia 6300. A closer look revealed that several other Nokia phones that run the exact same operating system as the Nokia 6300 are supported in OS X, so therefore, the 6300 is actually supported. We are going to modify iSync, so its also seeing the 6300 as a supported phone. In order to get this device working with iSync, follow these steps (it doesn't seem to work with Snow Leopard 10.6 !):
Quit iSync if its running. Right-click on the iSync application in your /Applications folder, and select “Show Package Contents”. Navigate through the folders to Contents -> PlugIns -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> PlugIns -> PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin -> Contents -> Resources. Back-up the MetaClasses.plist file by clicking on it, and select File->Duplicate from the Finder menu. Next, open MetaClasses.plist with a text editor.
The Nokia 6280 runs Series 40, 3rd edition with Bluetooth and USB, exactly the same as the 6300. We're going to copy the XML entry of the 6280 model, and changing it a little bit, so the 6300 is getting recognized by iSync.
The 6280 XML entry starts with “family.com.nokia.series40.3rdEd.bus.usb-bt”. So make a copy of it’s XML entry, and replace 6280 to 6300, and insert the new entry below it. Here is my Nokia 6300 definition or just use my complete MetaClasses.plist file.
In order to get an 6300 icon displayed in iSync, we need to add a tiff file to the same directory as the MetaClasses.plist
The icons are 60×60 pixel tiff files with transparent back-grounds. Here is the icon file that I used for the 6300, just put it in the same folder.
Save and close the MetaClasses.plist file and start up or restart iSync. Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Select “Add Device” from the iSync Devices menu. iSync should find your Nokia 6300, and display the icon that you've added.

Super ! Lot of thanks, my new bought nokia... works well ! I thougt I'll found this kind of info on the net and you are the one. From france.
Doesn’t seem to be working for me. I’ve tried the hack a couple of times, I bought the plugin from the German website, every time I just get an “unexpected” iSync error about halfway through syncing.
Maybe my phone OS is out of date? It’s V 04.20, 05-12-06 RM-217.
Awesome tips, thanks heaps! No second class Mac citizen for me!
If you lack Bluetooth, you can also get the 6300 to sync via USB if you change this section:
To this:
I also found that the name of the TIFF file was case sensitive. I had to match the casing before it showed up right.
Again, awesome tip. Thanks heaps!

Thanks, this is great! I wish I discovered this earlier though: I already bought a third-party plugin for this but I find your solution so much more "elegant".
I do have a problem though, whether with your or the third-party solution. Whenever I have any whole-day events, they show up as appointments from 8pm to 8pm on my phone. Why can't they show up as full-day notes? I didn't encounter this problem when I used iSync with my Nokia 6280. I'm guessing this has something to do with my time zone (I am at GMT +8)? Any pointers would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Thanks Koos for the post. Question, is there somewhere I need to store the nok6300.tiff file for my device to be recognized. I followed your instructions, inserted your 6300 XML entry underneath the 6280 entry, saved the MetaClasses.plist file, and then saved the new .tiff file to the desktop. Upon adding a new device in isync i get no device found. You can see I'm somewhat of a novice. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for your comment !
I didn't even knew the icon didn't work!
The icon has to be spelled in capital letters.
I've reuploaded the correct named file.
You have to put the NOK6300.tiff file in the following directory: iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources

I'm sorry but I can't figure this out.
I've copied the NOK6300.tiff file in the designated directory. And it seems to be fine.
However do you want me to copy and paste your Nokia 6300 text in after the 6280 text? Or should I replace the whole 6280 entry with the 6300 text?

@Erling Myrland
You can do both, but the most usual way is to place the new entry under the 6280.

@KAVANAKI
You can just hook up your phone with the usb cable and transfer the music to you device. This way is much faster than transfering those files via bluetooth.
In these comments is a fix for getting usb to work with iSync.

I am keen to learn how to do this but I think I have blown it. I cannot find "6280" in the Metaclasses.plist files. so I do not know where to insert your "6300"
XML entry.
I am very confused and not in the least computer savvy. I would welcome a more pedestrian breakdown. Graphics really help!

Hi,

What makes me a bit wonder from the beginning is that the structur of the folders was not the same like you explained.... and i´m not a proffesinal in Mac OS....

Thanx for your answer, by the time (in the night), i downloaded your file from your website and i just copied it in my directory and suddenly the sync with my "old" 6280 worked again and even the 6300 is working now too!!! But i don´t know why, because i copied my file and yours on my other computer (win xp) and i checked them and they are exactly the same, only my one had the symbol of a strawberry (from omnitron) and your was blank....

If the phone's software or hardware is different than the 6300 or 6280, this trick is not going to work with your phone. Your phone is also a brand new model, maybe you should wait a couple weeks and try to search the internet again.

First it seemed to work, but now iSync doesn´t find the 6300. also deleted the sync history, which didn´t help. I´m working with OSX 10.4.5 and iSync 2.1.1 (89.0), in german – any hints?

I suggest to re-apply the steps in the tutorial. The application has probably overwritten the MetaClasses file, which contains the Nokia 6300 entry.

I already did that, I tried it many times. Is it possible to get the whole folder?
Are there any prefs in the 6300 I have to set?
Thank you!

I don't think you have to find the solution on the phone's side. But I think I know what you're doing wrong / what you've forgotten. I think the partnership between your mac and your phone is broken. Try to add your Nokia 6300 again in the bluetooth devices list, and the problem must be solved.

Koos,
By their comments the method works fine but not for me that I have a Nokia 6275.
I tried all yours tips without success. A Nokia Dev page (http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/6275) said that 6275 has the same family as 6300. In fact ISync find it but said: "This device is not supported by ISync"
Any other clue on this. Totally appreciated.

I had a problem with my Nokia 6300 phone. Every time I browse the Opera Mini (3rd party software) I got prompted with "subscribe to packet data first". I set all the configuration but still won't able to access it. Please advice or recommend solution. thanks.. :)
thanks - worked perfectly for iCal sync!
My contacts aren't syncing from phone to mac though - any reason why that might happen?

IT WORKS GREAT. iSync is the easiest sync tool around and this hack helps keep that way. The ONLY thing that I was surpised by was that it doesn't sync the photo for your contact. My other phone is a Sony Ericsson P900 - a symbian phone and have used iSync with. It displays the photos for my contacts but Nokia 6300 doesn't. Is this an OS thing?

Sorry previous post was not clear.
Basically I changed the string 'Nokia+Nokia 6300' to 'Nokia Mobile Phones+Nokia 6275i' for the com.apple.cgmi+cgmm and the com.apple.gmi+gmm keys.
This allow iSync to add the phone but the sync errors out.
For all of you who are having issues with Calendar event hours sync'd incorrectly from iCal -> 6300, I think this can be corrected by modifying the following setting to a value of false:
hasTimeZone
<false/>
Inside the following file:
PhonePlugins/Nokia6300.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/MetaClasses.plist
If the setting has the value of true, then my iCal events appear with a GMT time difference on my handset when the event was created in iCal (it appears fine when created on the handset). You can avoid this by either changing your events as belonging to a "floating" time zone in iCal (enable Time zone support first in Advanced prefs).. or by modifying this setting. I wish I discovered this difference in the MetaClasses file first, would have saved me changing all my events to floating!

Hi just updated the phoneplugin but still can’t get the phone to synchronize the mobile contacts with the adress book.
Well it does synchronize but the phone contacts is beeing synchronized into the group “ALL” but I made a separate group just for the phone but it will not synchronize into this group?
Any idea?
I am running OS X 10.4.10, isync 2.4 and adress book 4.0.5.

Got the phone today and now all set up with your help. - Fantastic - made my day. all worked fine all though I could not save the picture for some strange reason.
Thank you! I was just looking for a iSync compatible phone & you save me some $$
Thanks a lot for your help. Worked a treat. Used the plug in on the link it was great.
It also works with the new iSync 3.0 in OS 10.5. But it became some more difficult:
1. Go to iSync/contents/plugins/applephoneconduit.syncdevice/contents/plugins/. Then duplicate for example the "nokia-7370.phoneplugin" folder. Rename it as "nokia-6300.phoneplugin"
2. Go to …/nokia-6300.phoneplugin/contents and open the info.plist file with TextEdit. Press Apple-Key and F and replace every 7370 with 6300. Save the file!
3. Do the same thing with the …/nokia-6300.phoneplugin/contents/resources/metaclasses.plist file.
4. Replace the "com.nokia.7370.tiff" file in the same folder by the icon from above. Don't forget to rename it as "com.nokia.6300.tiff" - Done
I've already tested it and it works perfectly! Have fun!
Got a 6120classic with the same series 40 3rd eition as the 6300.
How do you get the Hex ID of a model ? Would like to "customize" your plist by exchanging all >6300< entries by this model. Guess I have to modify also the modelid which for the 6300 is 0x04F9..... Where is this Info readable ?
Well, I have not customized any modelid. If your mobile is running the series 40 3rd edition, I guess you will not have any trouble. You can read this info exclusively here, since I figured it out on my own,

My problem still persists... I've tried both the plugin and the iSync hack suggested by Chris (worked well, but...)
When I start iSync and try to add the device, it finds 6300 and opens the connection to phone (and closes it after about 20 seconds).
I double-click the logo in iSync to add the device, but then it says no device found.
Anyway the Nokia 6300 now shows in iSync, but it doesn't do anything to sync it. iSync seems to be somewhat jammed, when it opens it just says "refreshing contact groups information" and doesn't get anywhere from there.
I'm running Powerbook G4 with Leopard and Nokia 6300 with firmware 5.00.
Thanks for your comments!

Thank you. I've justed upgrated my mac to leopard and i was affraid about loosing my contacts. Everything went allright.
This just refuses to work for me -- I'm sure the plugin is fine, but I think that the combination of Leopard and a USB connection has proved too much. Ironically, I only need to sync my 6300 because I'm swapping the crappy, outdated piece of sh*t for an iPhone. No OSX synchronisation in 2008? Bye bye, Nokia.
Hi,
Thanks for your 6300 iSync hacks. It has helped me to decide on Nokia 6300 and I bought a new 6300 two days ago.
I wrote about it in my blog.
6300 is a great phone besides being nice.
hmmm - this makes no difference to me - the device doesn't show up at all. It's in "about this mac" and I can use the card as a folder in the finder... when attached to the phone in usb. But when I add device it says no device found. AND I have no idea where you are seeing these icons show up; there are few options anywhere that seem to relate to choosing a phone model or telling isynch what to look for. It's just add device --> no device found. The end.
Thanks! I was nearly thinking about getting an iPhone and changing my contract!

Hi Koos,
I checked out the link you provide for getting birthdays to work on dabgortra.com. These infos didn't help me at all, and the iphone plugin provided on that page doesn't seem to work with isync version 3 and leopard.
But I did get the birthdays to work now!
The following page is in german, but you should find your way around:
http://www.macuser.de/forum/showthread.php?t=256320
go to the post from "idrops" on April 7 and add the birthday string as indicated after "SyncEngine-series40.plist".
This must be done in the following file:
Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/PhoneFamilySync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/PhoneConduitv2-series40.plist
It now syncs birthdays from Address Book to nokia 6300 and vice versa. (i.e. the birthday entry for an individual contact on the nokia is synched, and it appears in it's calendar).
Hope someone can use this... the pictures would be nice too, but that isn't as important to me..
oops, that was a mistake... I posted the wrong filename!
the correct file is :
SyncEngine-series40.plist
NOT the phoneconduitv2-series-40 one.

My Nokia 6300 is overflowing with textmessages (SMS) and I desperately need to save them on my MacBook.
For reasons far, very far, beyond my means of understanding (and I can understand a lot of bullshit) Nokia seems to be unwilling to support this need.
Could you show me a way to downlowd MY smses from MY handy onto MY MacBook?
My 6300 is by now running into severe troubles (frequent resets and all sorts of disturbing behaviours like getting stuck during calls etc) because of the overflow of smses.
Thank you for your help!

Am in the same situation with my 6276 as Daro. Since I did not know what the OS version is, i tried ALL of the Nokia entries in the MetaClasses.plist file. Didn't delete the prefs file between each attempt, though.

Sorry, thought is replied to something else...
You think your guidelines will work for the 6300i as well?

But unfortunately it doesn't work. I tried both - to edit the metaclass file or to replace it. both don't work... :-(
I have OSX, 10.5.6. The bloetooth connection is ok, i can send files in both ways.
can someone help me?
Have the same problems as Erwin.
Tried via USB and Bluetooth but get the following message.
“Device is not available or synchronization was cancelled. Close dialogs and applications on the phone and try again. Device synchronization failed.”
I'm having problems getting it to recognise my 6300 as well. Have tried koos's metafile and also the link suggested from nokia6300.net and neither work. I'm on Leopard 10.5.6 and would welcome any sugestions. Thanks

Just trying to follow Maki's comment regarding changing the 'hasTimeZone' setting to <false/> however can't find the MetaClasses.plist file that it resides in. Anyone able to tell me where to look? I know that the path is listed in Maki's post (PhonePlugins/Nokia6300.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/MetaClasses.plist) however I can't find the start folder (ie PhonePlugins).
Any help much appreicated - all is otherwise well with my Nokia6300 and OS X 10.5.
Thanks,

Hi again
An update:
Have found a MetaClasses.plist file - that being the one listed when you navigate according to Koos original instruction (ie Quit iSync if its running. Right-click on the iSync application in your /Applications folder, and select “Show Package Contents”. Navigate through the folders to Contents -> PlugIns -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> PlugIns -> PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin -> Contents -> Resources)
However that .plist file doesn't seem to be the correct one - it's certainly not in the correct folder as descried by Maki. I've searched that .plist file and can't find any reference to 'hasTimeZone' - so assume it must be the wrong .plist file I'm attempting to modify.
I'm running iSync 3.0.2 with 10.5.6.
Matthew
Hey your manual is very good, it works by me.
BUT I have another problem when I sync it stops by 32-nd of 182 files
always 32 files are "downloadet" an then restart my phone.
Do you know what the problem here is?
And how can I correct it?
Thanks
PS: I tryed it with Nokia-PC-Sync with USB-Wire, with Bluetooth

Umm, not working for me (OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard). iSync is crashing after adding the 6300 (recognizes it correctly).
I got this crash report:

It's not working for me either. Snow Leopard's iSync crashes after adding the Nokia 6300. Hope someone can help.
Would something similar work for the Nokia 6700? It is also on Series 40...
It works with Snow Leopard, too!!!!! I did it
You just have to change the old given code for 6300 (by Koos) a little bit.
Before you can do this you have to change your access rights, first of the folder "recources", then of "metaclasses.plist" to be able to save your changes.
Change this for Nokia 6300 Part
<string>0x0421/0x04F9</string> (old)
<string>0x0421/0x045A</string>(now)
Then it should work
Hey! Your plist worked perfectly on my 6300. Can I do the same thing with my old 6310i?

It works perfectly with Show Leopard. One should only do the change, which NokiaMaster proposed.
Thanks NokiaMaster.

Thanks NokiaMaster.
I am running snow leopard 10.6.1 and have made the changes (the string was already showing 0x045A). The 6300 shows up under add devices in isync but it then crashes. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

I am in exactly the same situation as Charlie with Snow Leopard; iSync crashes even after having made the change from NokiaMaster. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I am using a 6301 rather than a 6300; not sure if that matters. (And I have changed all the "6300's" in the code to "6301", so that is not the issue.)

@Charlie
I'm new Mac user running Snow Leopard and have a macbook (unibody). I had the same problems as you. The modifications on this site worked on 10.5, but stopped on 10.6.1. Anyway, I used Gav C's earlier post (see above) and downloaded the plugin.
I then created a folder called (Nokia-6300.phoneplugin) and placed the contents of the downloaded plugin into this folder. I then copied this new folder into iSync's package
/Applications/iSync.app/Contents/Plugins/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns
You'll notice all the other Nokia models within this folder.
Now start iSync and it should work every time!

I had the same issue with iSync crashing while adding the 6300 to iSync.
I got it working, as I copied the Nokia 6133 Plugin in /Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/Nokia-6133.phoneplugin to /Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/Nokia-6300.phoneplugin
In the plugin I opened the MetaClasses.plist and changed every 6133 value to 6300. Saved it and tried it and it worked!!

I followed Frank's advice, and it worked perfectly, with a Nokia 6301 on a Mac running Snow Leopard. The only thing I would add to Frank's comments is that I had to change every 6133 value to 6301 in every file in the folder in which those values occur, rather than just in the metaclasses file. Thanks, Frank.

I've also followed Frank's advice and it all connects and syncs, however when I went to enable calendar synchronisation it told me I did not have any sync enabled calendars!
The exact message is;
"No writeable calendars found"
"Before you can synchronize your calendars, you need to open a calendar application that supports synchronization and create at least one writable calendar."
Then it has a button for cancel and for open iCal.
Any ideas?
The Nokia 6300 ticked every box. Looks stylish - and has great functionlity. Its not too hard on the old pocket either, i got mine from tesco contract mobile and have to say - it was sent the next day and had no problems. Im really happy with it and would definatley recommend it.
Hi.
Thanks a lot!!! I'm syncing my nokia 6300 with Snow Leopard 10.6.1. I was looking for this long time ago, since SL was released.

Thank you very much. It´s just amazing that this works and it saved me so much time. In fact I just bought this great dependable phone after I found this thread, because for me it is absolutely indispensable to synchronize my business calendar. I wouldn´t have bought it if this wasn´t possible. Nokia should pay you for this ;-)
